The Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) has moved to stand up today in response to the significant flooding forecast for the Giru area.

LDMG Chair Mayor Dalle Cort said the LDMG is closely monitoring the situation and coordinating with the Bureau of Meteorology.

“Our priority is the safety and well-being of the community,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.

“I urge residents to prepare now by taking proactive steps to secure their homes and families and to stay informed through trusted sources.”

All requests for emergency assistance or for sandbags, contact the SES on 132 500.

Be proactive and protect yourself and family with these tips:

  • Keep up to date via the Burdekin Disaster and Emergency Information facebook page and the Burdekin Disaster Dashboard, https://disaster.burdekin.qld.gov.au/
  • Review your emergency kit and plan. Ensure your emergency kit has enough supplies for all family members, including pets, to sustain themselves for at least five days
  • Make sure you have a portable radio and some batteries in case your phone runs out of charge and you need to stay informed
  • Clean out your house gutters and overhanging branches
  • Secure items in your yard
  • Secure and tighten fixings and tie-down bolts on your roof
  • Identify how to turn off mains power for gas, water and electricity
  • Purchase emergency supplies such as masking tape, tarps, sandbags and water containers
  • Stay updated

Remember, if it's flooded, forget it.
