Dr. McGregor’s exceptional dedication to healthcare, community service, and philanthropy embodies the values we celebrate on Australia Day.
At the age of 27, Dr. McGregor began his career as Ipswich’s first paediatrician. From the start, he demonstrated an unwavering commitment to improving healthcare services.
In his first year, he raised funds to equip Ipswich Hospital’s Special Care Babies nursery with modern equipment and later worked tirelessly to enhance the children's ward environment.
Over 15 years, Dr. McGregor founded and led the Ipswich Children's Ward Amenities Fund, raising more than $126,000 to improve facilities for young patients. His impact extended far beyond the hospital walls. He has served on numerous boards, including West Moreton Health, St Andrews Hospital, and the Ipswich Hospital Foundation, while also supporting organisations such as the Asthma Foundation Queensland and Epilepsy Queensland.
Dr. McGregor’s philanthropic contributions include founding the Ipswich100 charity ride in 2000, which has raised over $1.6 million for local charities, with 85% benefiting the Ipswich Hospital Foundation and other causes.
His outstanding service has earned him numerous accolades, including the Mervin Jones Award and the Paul Harris Award, as well as being named the 2014 Queensland Senior Australian of the Year. He also carried the Queen’s Baton during the 2018 Gold Coast Commonwealth Games and was awarded an honorary Doctorate in Science by the University of Southern Queensland.
Mayor Pierina Dall Cort said Dr. McGregor is an inspiration and a shining example of what it means to dedicate one’s life to the service of others.
“We are honoured to have Dr. McGregor share his journey and help us celebrate the values of community and compassion this Australia Day."
