Your Waste Services Guide

Burdekin Shire Council provides residents with a three bin or two bin waste management system depending on the location of your property within Council's waste service area.

3 bin system

All households in the towns of Ayr, Home Hill, Brandon, Giru, and Alva have a three bin system.

  • Red Lid – 140L General Waste Bin – Collected each week
  • Yellow Lid – 240L Recyclable Waste Bin – Collected fortnightly
  • Green Lid – 240L Green Waste Bin – Collected fortnightly, on the alternate week to the recycling bin.

Rural households areas have a two bin system.

  • Red Lid – 140L General Waste Bin – Collected each week
  • Yellow Lid – 240L Recyclable Waste Bin – Collected fortnightly

Commercial businesses are provided with a 2 bin system but can also request a greenwaste service if needed.

  • Red Lid – 240L General Waste Bin – Collected each week
  • Yellow Lid – 240L Recyclable Waste Bin – Collected fortnightly
  • Green Lid – 240L Green Waste Bin – Collected fortnightly, on the alternate week to the recycling bin (optional)

Wheelie Bin Kerbside Collection Instructions

Bin placement instructions

  • Place bins on kerb the night before collection day
  • Make sure the bins are at least 1 metre from the kerb and at least 1 metre between the two bins
  • Place bins so that the opening and handles face the road
  • Ensure the lid of your bin is completely closed
  • Ensure no overhanging branches
  • Avoid placing your bins near obstacles such as parked cars or power poles that will prevent collection
  • Do not overload your bin. The weight limit is 55kg.
  • Do not place anything on top of your bins or lean anything against your bins.
  • Bin collection days remain unchanged for Burdekin residents even if your bin day falls on a public holiday.

The following items are prohibited from being placed in your wheelie bin:

Chemicals and pesticides

Chemical pesticides

Lead acid batteries

Gas bottles and fire extinguishers

Paints, solvents, motor and cooking oils

Building materials (i.e concrete, bricks and timber)

Stacked bricks

Asbestos or other hazardous material

Wheelie Bin Services - Need Help?

Please contact Council’s Customer Service Centre regarding your weekly wheelie bin collection if you need assistance with any of the following matters:-

  • You have built a new residence or shed and require a new waste service for your property;
  • Your bin was not tipped;
  • Your bin has been stolen;
  • Your bin is cracked or broken, the lid has fallen off or is damaged, the wheels or axle are broken or damaged;
  • You need to order an extra bin service or regular additional tips;
  • You want to upgrade your refuse bin size from a 140L to a 240L wheelie bin; and
  • You need to cancel a bin service. Please note that cancelling of a waste service will only be approved where the building has been demolished or is unfit for occupation. Commercial businesses may cancel their waste service provided that they are receiving an equivalent waste service from an approved private contactor.
