Kirknie Landfill

Kirknie Cleanaway Kerbside Truck Tip

The Kirknie Road Landfill receives the majority of waste produced in the Burdekin Shire and the cost of ongoing management is extremely expensive. Unfortunately a large proportion of this waste is potentially recyclable. Everyone is encouraged to separate materials for recycling to ensure that waste is not disposed to landfill unnecessarily. Our landfill is capable of accepting a range of general waste items, however we ask that residents and commercial contractors help us to recycle as much as possible by placing recyclable items in the marked areas.

With the introduction of the Queensland Government Waste Levy all waste going to landfill in Queensland will incur the relevant levy. There are exemptions for some specific types of waste. For more information of the Queensland Waste Levy see Council's Waste Levy page.

RRA pad

To comply with the Queensland Waste Levy legislation Council has recently constructed two resource recovery areas specifically designed to segregate, process and store our recyclable resources including:

  • Greenwaste
  • Tyres
  • Scrap metal
  • Mattresses
  • Asphalt
  • Concrete
  • Bricks and tiles
  • Clean fill

All of the above waste products do not attract the levy cost and are recycled or repurposed. For example the concrete, brick and tiles are processed into crushed material and used in the construction of roads at the landfill and clean fill is used for waste cover in the landfill cell.

To encourage the separation of recycable items and minimise the amount of waste disposed of in landfill Council offers free disposal for the majority of household waste for Burdekin domestic residents only.

To take advantage of this you must separate the waste from the recyclable items.

Fees apply to all unsorted domestic waste and commercial waste. Fees apply to certain recyclable items.

See Council's Fees and Charges for more information.

Transfer Station Second Hand Shops

Second hand Shop

Council’s secondhand shops located at the Ayr, Home Hill and Giru Transfer Stations are popular with Burdekin residents. Not only will you save money but you are also repurposing an item and reducing the amount of waste sent to landfill thus helping the environment.

The goods available in the shop are items such as household furniture and goods, bikes, play equipment and toys, tools, books and various bric-a-brac.

Money made from the sales at the secondhand shop go towards reducing the cost of waste disposal for the Burdekin community.
