Assistance with Pest plants
Herbicide Subsidy Scheme
Council has a co-contribution subsidy available for landholders to save money on the cost of herbicide. Landholders must have a current Property Biosecurity Plan to access the scheme.
Under the scheme Council has identified the focus weeds for the Scheme and contributes 40% towards the cost of the herbicide to treat these weeds.
The maximum order total is $4,000 however this is dependent on the size of the property to be treated and the level of weed infestation as indicated in the Property Biosecurity Plan.
For more information please see the Herbicide Subsidy Scheme Policy on Council's Policies web page.
Quick Spray Units
Council has two quick spray units available for hire to assist landholders with controlling weeds.
The units are well utilised so bookings are essential. A small hiring fee applies. Please see Council's Fees and Charges for further information.
Assistance with Pest Animals
Pig Traps and Hog Hoppers
Council has pig traps and hog hoppers available for loan to landholders experiencing problems with feral pigs.
There is no charge for the loan of these units.
1080 baiting for feral pigs and wild dogs
Council provides a free 1080 (Sodium fluoroacetate) baiting service to landholders for the control and management of declared animals such as feral pigs and wild dogs year-round.
For feral pigs pre-baiting (free feeding) and baiting material is provided by the landowner. Three days of pre-feeding increases the probability of animals returning for more feed. 1080 poison is then injected to the feed by Council Pest Management officers following all legislative requirements.
Wild dog baits do not need pre-feeding. The baits are injected on the day of distribution by Pest Management Officers and placed strategically around the property by the landholder after biosecurity regulations and bait sizes are followed. A coordinated wild dog baiting program is also held in October/November each year.
Dingo and Fox Bounty
Council offers a bounty for the whole pelt of a dingo or fox from within the Burdekin Shire area only.
To claim the bounty, you must call Council's Customer Service Centre to request for an inspection of any pelts. A pelt is single piece of fur, running from snout, including the ears and running from the head, along the animals back and including the tail.
