Burdekin to be disaster ready with Clean Up November
Council is encouraging all residents to take advantage of Burdekin waste facilities’ Clean Up November, including further relaxed dump charges on Sunday 28 November.
The announcement of Clean Up November comes in preparation for the 2021/22 disaster season, encouraging residents to clear yards of debris prior to storms or potential cyclones.
Sunday 28 November will include a relaxation of dump charges, despite most waste disposal being free daily provided it is sorted. Clare Transfer Station’s operations and rules will remain the same on the day.
Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said it was important for all residents to do their part to get ready and stay alert during disaster season.
“While Council is very excited to promote Clean Up November ahead of cyclone season, I want to remind residents that trips to the Burdekin’s Transfer Stations and Landfill are essentially free every day for sorted domestic waste,” Cr McLaughlin said.
Currently there are no charges for domestic waste oil, fire extinguishers, white goods, scrap metal, E-waste, fluoro tubes, flares, gas bottles, flares and EPIRBs, cardboard and green waste provided they are sorted.
“Residents who want to avoid queues are welcome to visit any of the Burdekin’s Transfer Station or Landfill sites with their sorted waste any day of the week, with only certain items such as tyres and mattresses requiring a fee to dispose of. On the free dump day, fees will be waived for passenger, motorbike and 4WD tyres, however larger tyres will still attract a fee to dispose of.
“As disaster season approaches, I want to encourage everyone to do their part and make sure yards are free of debris, fixtures are secure and gutters are cleared before storms hit. We also ask that residents lend a hand to elderly neighbours, family and friends who may need help transporting their waste.”
Residents are reminded to cover their loads when travelling to drop off any waste. Residents are also reminded that green waste, recyclables, scrap metal, tyres and concrete must be separated prior to disposal, and that hazardous waste such as paints and solvents, chemical waste and contaminated soil cannot be accepted at Council Landfill or Transfer Stations.
Commercial waste, truck loads and domestic asbestos disposal will continue to attract standard disposal charges.
Relaxed charges for waste at the Transfer Stations and Kirknie Road Landfill will occur on Sunday 28 November. For further information about waste disposal, please visit Council’s website www.burdekin.qld.gov.au or contact Council’s Customer Service Centre on 4783 9800.
