Burdekin Invites North Queensland to Experience First Cane Fire for 2023

The Burdekin Shire Council is proud to invite North Queensland to experience the magic of the region’s first cane fire for 2023 as part of the Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival, the signature destination event of the region.

This unique and awe-inspiring event will take place on the Friday night of the festival, 26 May 2023.

The Burdekin region is well-known as the sugar cane capital of Australia, and the first cane fire of the season is a special event that marks the start of the harvest period.

The Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival is the perfect opportunity for North Queenslanders to experience this iconic and time-honoured tradition, as well as enjoy a range of other exciting activities and events.

Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said she was thrilled to extend an invitation to North Queensland and visitors to attend the Shires signature festival and indulge in a weekend of unforgettable festivities.

“We’re excited to invite North Queensland to come and experience the magic of our first cane fire for 2023,” Cr McLaughlin said.

“This event is a special moment for our region, and we’re thrilled to be able to share it with residents and visitors as part of the Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival.

“We encourage everyone to come along and experience this unique and unforgettable event for themselves.”

In addition to the first cane fire, the Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival will feature a wide range of activities and events, including the Australian Hand Cane Cutting Championships on Saturday 27 May 2023, live music, performances, delicious food and drink vendors, and activities for all ages.

The Sweet Days Hot Nights Festival will take place at the Home Hill Showgrounds on Friday 26 May and Saturday 27 May 2023.
