Progress Update on Burdekin Shire Council’s Feral Deer Program
Burdekin Shire Council is pleased to provide an update on the ongoing Feral Deer Program, which commenced in January 2024.
Funded by the Activating Reef Guardian Council Action Plan grant, this initiative is part of a coordinated effort to manage and mitigate the impact of feral deer populations on the region's natural environment, agriculture, and public safety.
The Department of Agriculture and Fisheries (DAF) has played a pivotal role in the program's early stages, conducting an aerial survey which provided the baseline data to reflect deer locations and numbers in February 2024.
Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said managing the impact of feral deer is a priority for our community, and the progress we've made so far in the Feral Deer Program is a testament to the dedication and collaboration of everyone involved.
“The aerial surveys, workshops, and on-the-ground activities are all crucial steps in protecting our natural environment, agriculture, and public safety,” Cr Dalle Cort said.
“I encourage all residents to stay engaged and support these efforts as we continue to work towards a sustainable future for the Burdekin Shire.’
Council has been actively engaging with stakeholders to encourage participation in the program. This collaboration is essential to ensure the success of the initiative and to manage the growing feral deer populations effectively.
Council extends its gratitude to the stakeholder groups and community members who have contributed to the program's success thus far. Your participation is vital in protecting our environment and ensuring the safety and sustainability of our region.
