Council displays innovative tools and technologies at Plantation Park Markets
Burdekin Shire Council's recent community event at Plantation Park on Sunday 15 September 2024, was a great success, showcasing Council's commitment as a Reef Guardian Council.
The Biosecurity and Health team showcased innovative tools and technologies that Council has recently acquired, focusing on reef education and awareness, circular economy, land rehabilitation and restoration.
This initiative is aimed at promoting sustainable practices and enhancing environmental conservation within the community.
Key features of the event included the Weedoo Aquatic Weed Removal Boat. The Weedoo boat is an efficient solution for the removal of aquatic weeds and will be actively used to physically remove declared aquatic weeds, which landholders can then repurpose as mulch, contributing to a more efficient management of local waterways.
Attendees saw a display of the mulcher attachment to show its effectiveness in managing weeds on private land and is available for the community to hire. This tool is a crucial resource for land restoration and rehabilitation, enabling landowners to maintain their properties sustainably, and meeting their biosecurity obligations.
The latest feral deer trap, fitted with a 4G camera, was introduced to support community efforts in controlling feral deer populations and protecting the local environment. The trap is also available for community loan.
Visitors of all ages also experienced the beauty of the Great Barrier Reef through virtual reality goggles, offering a captivating way to learn about the reef's importance and understand its critical role in our environment.
The event drew a great community turnout, with many engaging in these hands-on exhibits and learning more about sustainable land management practices. This was an important step in raising awareness and reinforcing the importance of preserving our natural resources.
Burdekin Shire Council extends its gratitude to the Great Barrier Reef Authority for their generous grant through the Activating Local Council Reef Action Plans, which made this event possible. Council looks forward to continuing the shared commitment to protecting our natural environment.
