Council urges caution due to magpie breeding season
Burdekin Shire Council is advising residents and visitors to take caution as magpie swooping season is in full swing.
The magpie breeding season, which spans from July to December, has seen increased activity in the region causing concern for some members of the community.
Magpies are notorious for swooping at humans and pets within their territory, usually within a 100-metre radius around their nesting trees. While most magpies tolerate the presence of people some may feel threatened and act defensively, particularly during breeding season.
Although many attacks are mild they can occasionally result in serious injuries, especially to the eyes and head.
Signs have been placed in known swooping areas, including near the Burdekin Theatre entrance, to warn pedestrians of the increased risk.
To minimise the chance of attracting magpies to nest near your property or to protect yourself while out and about, Council offers the following advice:
- Do not feed magpies – ensure no food scraps or rubbish are left in your yard.
- Remove unnecessary sources of water from your yard if magpies are causing a nuisance.
- Avoid disturbing magpies – never remove nests or eggs, and do not approach or touch young birds.
- Do not provoke the birds – avoid throwing objects or attempting to destroy their nests, as this could heighten their defensive behaviour.
- Be cautious during breeding season – particularly between June and December, when swooping activity is most frequent.
- Residents who walk or cycle near the Burdekin Theatre and other areas where magpie activity is noted should consider taking precautions such as wearing hats or sunglasses to protect their face and eyes.
Council encourages residents to report any aggressive magpie behaviour to assist in monitoring high-risk areas and ensuring the safety of the community.
