Council adopts new Tree Management Policy
Burdekin Shire Council has officially adopted a comprehensive Tree Management Policy to enhance urban greenery and protect the region’s natural environment.
This policy outlines strategies to preserve trees while balancing safety, infrastructure and sustainability for the community.
The Tree Management Policy was developed in response to community feedback and includes a framework for managing public trees, assessing risks and ensuring the health and longevity of urban greenery. The initiative aims to provide clarity for residents while promoting environmental responsibility across the Shire.
Mayor Pierina Dalle Cort said the policy demonstrates Council's commitment to fostering a sustainable future for the region.
“Council is committed to a ‘no net loss’ approach for all public trees. When tree removal is unavoidable due to operational activities or warranted community requests, we will ensure another tree is planted within 24 months,” Mayor Dalle Cort said.
“This policy ensures Council are managing trees effectively while safeguarding public safety and infrastructure."
The Tree Management Policy highlights key areas such as pruning, planting and replacement practices, ensuring that decisions are guided by expert advice and community input. It also establishes clear guidelines for reporting concerns or requesting maintenance.
Council encourages residents to review the Tree Management Policy on its website. For more information, visit burdekin.qld.gov.au.
