Burdekin Local Disaster Management Group Chair Cr Lyn McLaughlin is tonight urging local residents to
remain vigilant despite the risk of Tropical Cyclone Kimi reaching landfall decreasing.
TC Kimi is expected to continue moving south-southeast tonight and become slow moving on Tuesday, off
the coast between Hinchinbrook Island and Townsville.
As the cyclone moves southwards, it is expected to weaken below category 2 strength tonight. Further
weakening is likely as it stalls off the coast on Tuesday. Longer term movement is expected to be back
towards the north as a weak tropical low.
“Now is not the time to rest on our laurels as the system's movement has been erratic,” Cr McLaughlin said.
“However, due to its recent movement towards the south-southeast, a coastal crossing between
Hinchinbrook Island and Townsville tonight or early tomorrow is now unlikely.”
As at 8pm tonight TC Kimi was located approximately 150 kilometres north-north east of Townsville.
“A teleconference between north Queensland Mayors and representatives from the Queensland Disaster
Management Committee (QDMC) tonight confirmed there is no immediate threat to the Burdekin,” Cr
McLaughlin said.
“We have a further briefing with the QMDC at 0800 tomorrow (Tuesday) morning.”
