Stage three of Parker Street upgrade to commence this Sunday
The next stage of Parker Street’s drainage duplication upgrade and roundabout construction will commence this weekend, requiring a traffic diversion off Queen Street.
Stage three of the upgrade will partially close the intersection of Parker and Queen Streets from this Sunday, 7 March until late March, weather permitting.
Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin said the upgrade would benefit residents and business owners along the East End section of Queen Street, improve drainage and make Parker Street safer for motorists and pedestrians.
“Stage two of the Parker Street upgrade included the construction of a roundabout on the Parker and MacMillan Streets intersection, which will make the intersection much safer and is a welcome addition for all business owners and residents. While stage three of the Parker Street upgrade will require further diversions, I want to thank all road users for their patience as this major infrastructure project is completed,” Cr McLaughlin said.
“An important diversion as part of this road closure is that caravans and heavy or long vehicles will not be able to travel along Queen Street between Edwards and Parker Streets, due to there being no adequate space for them to perform a U-turn prior to the closed intersection. Regular-sized vehicles wanting to access any of the businesses along Queen Street are able to travel along that section of road, however must follow the directions of all signage.
“Despite roadworks continuing, all shops in the area remain open and I encourage residents to continue shopping locally and getting their entries in for the Burdekin Rewards Loyalty Program – most businesses in the East End area are participating stores in the program, ensuring that every time you shop, you’re one stamp closer to an entry.”
Stage three of the Parker Street upgrade will commence on Sunday 7 March, and is expected to be completed in late March, weather permitting. Motorists are advised to follow the directions of all signage and crew in the area. Council apologises for the inconvenience.
