Shovel Ready for National Tree Planting Day
Community members are being asked to put on a long sleeve shirt, hat and enclosed shoes and dig deep for nature in an effort to plant 200 native trees for National Tree Day on Sunday 1 August 2021.
Burdekin Shire Council Mayor Lyn McLaughlin encouraged residents of all ages to get involved in the Planet Ark initiative which is proudly sponsored by Toyota Australia.
“National Tree Day is a great opportunity for the community, Lower Burdekin Landcare Association and Council to work together in making real improvements to our environment,” she said.
“Volunteers who come along on Sunday will be treated to a free barbecue and free drinks,” Cr McLaughlin.
National Tree Day is Australia’s largest tree-planting and nature care event. Since its inception in 1996, nearly 26 million trees have been planted.
The 2021 Burdekin National Tree Day event will run from 8:30am to 11:30am meeting at Burdekin Junior Football Club’s Car Park off Beach Road, Ayr. Volunteers will receive gloves, tools, sunscreen, and the equipment needed to plant the trees. Participants will need a hat and closed in shoes, and it is recommended people also wear a long-sleeved shirt and long pants for protection.
